How in the world do you show up in Google’s Local 10.

One of the most clicked areas on Google’s home page is defiantly the first 4 or 5 result’s. But what if, because of national competition, your SEO efforts just aren’t strong enough to even get you on the first, second, third, or even fourth page. What if there were a way to completely take over one the first positions on a local search. Would this help your business?
Let’s start out with an explanation on what the Google 10 pack is and how you can reap great returns with minimal effort.

Google, along with most search engines, want to return the best results for your query. So when you ask it to find something it looks for the best answer. Hence the name, Search Engine. With that being said any time you enter an address element (ie. street name, city, state, zip code or region) the Search engines looks for the best result. More often than not Google will give a results page with a map and 10 listings at the top of their result page if a address element is used. This is called a Google 10 Pack. The only way you can be listed on this is by having an address element that the searcher has requested, such as the city, state or zip code on your page. This is why it’s EXTREMELY important to include as much GEO information as possible on each page of your site. Especially if you do most of your business in the local community. With 8 out 10 small business websites being nothing more than an online brochure it’s important, especially if you sell something to the public, to include the physical address along with service areas somewhere on the page.

Here is a list of items you should consider when targeting local customers:

  1. Business Address on EVERY page
  2. Define an area you do business in, (Bay Area, Metro region, City, Village, etc.)
  3. Tell the Search Engine where your located through Meta Tags
  4. Register your business with Search Engines
  5. Make sure your phone number is correct on your web site
  6. Reference as many regional attractions as possible.
  7. Register and update you site on sites such as local.com

I haven’t given much thought into this until this post. I will need to see if my company website is appearing for local searches.

    Thanks.
